The fragrance pyramid: top, heart and base notes explained
Why a perfume does not smell the same when you spray it as three hours later, and how to read its notes before you buy.
If you try a perfume in a shop and smell your wrist again a few hours later, it is normal to think it has changed. It has: a perfume is not a single smell but a blend of ingredients that evaporate at different speeds. That evolution is described with the fragrance pyramid, which splits the notes into three levels.
Top notes: the first impression
These are what you notice as soon as you apply the perfume. They are usually light, volatile ingredients such as citrus (bergamot, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit), aromatic herbs or some fresh spices. They shine brightly but fade fast: usually within 15 minutes to an hour.
That is why it is not a good idea to buy on the first impact alone: what you fall for in the first second may be gone before you leave the house.
Heart notes: the perfume’s personality
They appear as the top notes fade and carry the main character of the fragrance for several hours. This is where you usually find flowers (jasmine, rose, orange blossom, lavender), rounder fruits and many spices. When a perfume is described as floral, spicy or fruity, it is almost always its heart talking.
Base notes: what stays on your skin
These are the heaviest molecules and the longest-lasting: they can be noticed for hours and even the next day on your clothes. Woods (cedar, sandalwood, vetiver), amber, vanilla, musk, patchouli or resins add depth and fix the rest of the ingredients.
How to use the pyramid to choose
- If you like a perfume and want something similar, look above all at the heart and the base: that is what you will wear for most of the day.
- For something fresh in hot weather, check that the top and heart have citrus, aquatic or aromatic notes, and that the base is not too dense.
- If you want it to last, look for bases with woods, amber, vanilla or musk.
- Always test on skin and wait at least an hour before deciding.
Every page in our catalogue shows the full pyramid Divain publishes for that perfume. You can start with the list of all perfumes or search for a specific note, such as vanilla or bergamot, in the catalogue search.
